make a difference

Not everyone can spend their life's work pursuing social justice. However, all of us can make a small contribution to those who do.

Brian Lewinstein

because of Brian

Brian was a regular guy who had enormous gifts to share with the world. He was unique in his combination of intellect, sensitivity, quiet humor & unpretentiousness.

Brian left us suddenly and far too soon in a tragic hiking accident in 2018. He was 23.

His days with us were too few, but they were filled with life, love and purpose. Committed to social justice issues, Brian looked forward to a career in public interest law helping underserved communities.

Brian believed he could Make a Difference. And he has. And we can too. Help us support those who can manifest his life’s ambitions.

The Brian Lewinstein Social Justice Scholarship presents a Berkeley Law Student or Students, committed to pursuing a career in public interest and social justice, with an annual gift. Established in August 2018 by Brian’s grandmother, Marlene Newell, the scholarship honors Brian’s memory, a member of the Berkeley Law Class of 2020.
Brian was a UC Berkeley Law student and Equal Justice America Fellow at the East Bay Community Law Center. To honor Brian’s memory and to encourage others to follow his example, EJA and EBCLC created a permanent Brian Lewinstein Youth Justice Fellowship. Every two years, they offer a $130,000, two-year EJA Fellowship to a graduating Berkeley Law student to work full-time with EBCLC, serving and empowering young people at risk of entering the juvenile justice system.
